POWER SUPPLY TO IMPROVE WITHIN 72 HOURS – MINISTER

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has assured Nigerians that electricity supply is expected to begin improving within 48 to 72 hours as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to address the challenges behind recent nationwide outages.

Tegbe gave the assurance in a statement titled “Update on Power Situation” on Friday, November 6, 2026, acknowledging the hardship caused by prolonged blackouts affecting households and businesses in several parts of the country, including Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory.

The minister attributed the decline in electricity supply to planned maintenance at Egbin Power Station in Lagos, which accounts for about 16 per cent of electricity supplied to the national grid, alongside gas supply constraints affecting some thermal power plants.

He also identified damage to critical transmission lines as another challenge, particularly in Lagos, where it has restricted alternative routes for electricity transmission.

According to Tegbe, the combination of these challenges has reduced the amount of electricity available on the national grid, forcing operators to introduce load shedding in some areas.

He said the ministry was working with relevant power sector operators to restore affected generating units in phases, improve gas supply and accelerate repairs to damaged infrastructure.

The minister, however, clarified that the first affected generating units were expected to return to service within 48 to 72 hours, with electricity supply expected to improve gradually as restoration progresses.

Meanwhile, the Transmission Company of Nigeria and Ikeja Electric have disagreed over the causes of recent power interruptions, with TCN attributing most of the disruptions to low electricity generation and load shedding.

Tegbe thanked affected consumers for their patience, assuring Nigerians that the government was working to restore more stable electricity supply.
