MAKINDE WARNS FG AGAINST SUPPRESSING OPPOSITION
Oyo State Governor and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, has cautioned the Federal Government against undermining democratic institutions or using them to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Makinde made the call while reacting to the Federal High Court judgment that nullified the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by former Senate President David Mark. The ruling also invalidated decisions taken by the leadership, including the process that produced former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate.
Speaking during an interview with Bauchi Radio Broadcasting, the governor expressed concern that the judgment could threaten the participation of a major opposition party in the forthcoming elections.
He appealed to President Bola Tinubu’s administration to safeguard the independence of key democratic institutions, particularly the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Makinde stressed that governments may come and go, but Nigeria’s institutions must remain strong and independent for democracy to function properly.
He also urged the Federal Government to allow opposition parties to operate freely and compete on a level playing field, insisting that political victory should be determined through fair elections.
Beyond the ADC crisis, Makinde appealed to Nigerians not to lose hope despite the country’s economic and political challenges. He expressed optimism that the difficulties facing the nation could be overcome.
Meanwhile, the ADC leadership has rejected the court judgment and indicated plans to challenge it at the Court of Appeal. Atiku has also vowed to appeal the decision.
The ruling has sparked fresh political debate over the future of the ADC and the ability of opposition parties to participate fully in the 2027 general elections.
