FG plans housing regulation as sector contributes N77tn to economy
The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce a comprehensive regulatory framework for Nigeria’s housing sector, following the industry’s significant contribution of N77 trillion to the nation’s economy in 2025.
The proposed regulation is aimed at improving transparency, strengthening compliance with building standards, protecting homebuyers and investors, and promoting sustainable growth across the real estate industry. Government officials say the framework will also address longstanding challenges such as unregulated developments, housing deficits, and inadequate quality control.
According to the government, the housing sector’s N77 trillion contribution underscores its growing importance to Nigeria’s economy and highlights the need for policies that encourage investment while ensuring accountability and consumer protection.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting that a well-structured regulatory system could boost investor confidence, attract more private sector participation, and accelerate the delivery of affordable housing nationwide.
The Federal Government said it will continue engaging relevant stakeholders as it finalizes the framework, with the goal of creating a more efficient, transparent, and resilient housing sector that supports economic development and meets the country’s growing housing needs.
