Court Grants Sowore Fresh N200 Million Bail
L High Court sitting in Abuja has granted activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, fresh bail in the sum of N200 million, weeks after his earlier bail was revoked.
The court ruled that Sowore must meet specified bail conditions, including the provision of suitable sureties, before he can regain his freedom pending the continuation of his trial.
During the proceedings, the presiding judge held that the fresh bail application had merit and should be granted in accordance with the law, while reminding the defendant of the need to comply strictly with all conditions attached to the order.
The case had earlier attracted national attention following the revocation of Sowore’s previous bail over alleged non-compliance with court directives. His legal team subsequently filed a fresh application, arguing that he was entitled to bail under the Constitution and that there was no risk of him absconding from trial.
The prosecution, however, urged the court to ensure that any bail granted would guarantee the defendant’s appearance throughout the judicial process.
Following the ruling, Sowore’s lawyers welcomed the decision and expressed confidence that the bail conditions would be met promptly to enable his release.
The matter was adjourned to a later date for the continuation of trial, with the court reiterating that the case would proceed in accordance with due process.
