ASUU Gives Imo, Anambra Governors 14-Day Ultimatum, Threatens Indefinite Strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Owerri Zone, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the governors of Imo and Anambra states over the alleged failure to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and address outstanding welfare issues affecting lecturers in state-owned universities.
The union warned that it could embark on an indefinite strike if the state governments fail to meet its demands within the stipulated period.
Addressing journalists, ASUU officials said the ultimatum followed repeated appeals and engagements with the affected state governments, which they claimed had yielded little or no progress. The union expressed concern over delays in implementing agreed conditions of service, payment of earned academic allowances and other outstanding entitlements.
According to ASUU, the continued non-implementation of the agreement has negatively affected the welfare and morale of academic staff, with implications for the quality of teaching, research and learning in the affected institutions.
The union called on the governors of Imo and Anambra states to urgently intervene and honour their commitments to avoid another disruption of academic activities.
ASUU maintained that while it remains open to dialogue, it would not hesitate to embark on an indefinite strike if the issues remain unresolved after the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum.
The development has raised fresh concerns among students and parents, who fear that another industrial action could further disrupt the academic calendar in the affected universities.
