FG pushes Nigerian startups to extend across Africa under AfCFTA

The Federal Government has urged Nigerian startups to take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to expand their businesses across Africa, unveiling a new acceleration programme focused on cross-border trade and innovation.

The initiative is aimed at supporting local technology-driven businesses with mentorship, funding opportunities, market access, and regulatory guidance as they seek to enter other African markets under the AfCFTA framework.

Officials said the programme will help position Nigerian startups as major players in Africaโ€™s digital economy while promoting regional integration and economic growth. The government noted that Nigerian entrepreneurs possess the talent and innovation needed to compete successfully on the continent.

Speaking on the development, authorities stressed the importance of collaboration between startups, investors, and policymakers in unlocking the opportunities created by the free trade agreement. They added that the programme would also focus on helping businesses scale sustainably and navigate challenges linked to cross-border operations.

The AfCFTA agreement, which seeks to create a single African market for goods and services, is expected to boost intra-African trade and open new opportunities for businesses across the continent. Analysts believe Nigerian startups could benefit significantly due to the countryโ€™s growing tech ecosystem and youthful population.

The move comes as Nigeria continues efforts to strengthen its position as one of Africaโ€™s leading innovation and technology hubs.
