Opposition parties in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have announced plans for nationwide protests over allegations that President Félix Tshisekedi is seeking to extend his stay in office beyond the constitutional limit.

The opposition accuses the government of attempting to amend the country’s constitution to pave the way for a possible third presidential term, a move they describe as a threat to democracy and constitutional order. They have urged citizens to participate in peaceful demonstrations to defend democratic institutions.

Government officials have denied the allegations, insisting that no formal process has been initiated to alter presidential term limits. They have also called on political actors to avoid actions that could trigger unrest and pledged to maintain public order.

The planned demonstrations come amid growing political tensions in the Central African nation, with analysts warning that the dispute could heighten instability ahead of future elections. Civil society groups have appealed to both the government and protesters to exercise restraint and resolve differences through dialogue.

Security agencies are expected to be on high alert as authorities prepare for the scheduled protests across several major cities.
