Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Fined N500,000 Over Delay in Godwin Emefiele Trial
An Federal Capital Territory High Court has fined the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) the sum of N500,000 for causing delays in the ongoing trial of former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
The court imposed the fine after the prosecution failed to present a scheduled witness, a development that stalled proceedings in the case. The judge expressed concern over repeated delays attributed to the absence of prosecution witnesses.
During the hearing in Abuja, the court granted what it described as a final adjournment to allow the prosecution to ensure the presence of its witness at the next sitting.
The judge warned that the court would not tolerate further delays in the trial and stressed the importance of ensuring speedy justice.
Emefiele, who previously served as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, is facing charges brought against him by the anti-graft agency.
The court’s decision to impose a monetary penalty on the EFCC underscores growing judicial concerns over delays in high-profile criminal trials.
The case was subsequently adjourned to a later date for continuation of hearing. ⚖️🇳🇬
