NPA Halts Truck Movements at Lagos Port Amidst Severe Congestion

1 min read

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has announced a temporary suspension of truck releases from the Lagos Port Complex due to significant congestion impacting operations.

The directive, communicated to the Truck Transit Park—responsible for managing truck movements along the Apapa port corridor—was issued on Tuesday.

This move is poised to disrupt logistics and supply chain dynamics, hampering the flow of goods in and out of Nigeria’s busiest port.

The NPA’s notice indicated that the situation is under close observation, with plans to resume normal operations once conditions improve.

“Please be informed that there is a temporary hold on truck release from the Lagos Port Complex pre-gates due to ongoing congestion. We are closely monitoring the situation and will relax the hold as soon as conditions improve,” the notice read.

The congestion has raised alarms within the logistics and transportation sectors, with stakeholders voicing concerns over the economic implications.

Mr. Sani Mohammed, an official with the Association of Maritime Transport Owners, attributed the delays to inefficiencies among terminal operators. He criticized their management of cargo movement, stating, “What we are experiencing is a result of low efficiency by the terminal operators. They have not been able to facilitate the smooth movement of cargo, and yet, they still charge demurrage fees for the delays caused by their inefficiency.”
