WHO Urges Stronger Action to Meet 2030 Hepatitis Elimination Target

The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for intensified global efforts to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030, warning that current progress remains insufficient.

In its latest report, the WHO said gaps in testing, diagnosis, and treatment continue to hinder efforts to tackle diseases such as Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. The agency noted that millions of people worldwide remain unaware of their infection status, limiting access to life-saving care.

Health experts emphasized the need for expanded screening programmes, improved access to affordable treatment, and stronger public health systems to accelerate progress. They also called for increased funding and political commitment from governments and stakeholders.

According to the report, while some countries have made notable advances, global momentum must be significantly scaled up to meet the 2030 elimination targets.

The WHO reiterated that early detection and timely treatment are critical to reducing transmission, preventing complications, and ultimately ending hepatitis as a public health threat.
