Court Orders MTN, Airtel to Restore Airtime Credit Service
A Nigerian court has ordered telecom operators MTN Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria to immediately restore airtime and data credit services.
The court also restrained the companies from suspending access to the services pending the determination of a substantive suit before it. The ruling followed concerns over disruptions affecting subscribers who rely on airtime and data advances.
Legal representatives argued that the suspension of such services had significant implications for consumers, particularly in a country where mobile connectivity is essential for daily communication and business transactions.
In its decision, the court emphasized the need to protect consumer rights while the case is being fully heard. It directed both telecom firms to maintain the status quo and ensure uninterrupted access for users.
Industry observers say the development could have broader implications for telecom service regulations and customer protection policies in Nigeria.
The matter has been adjourned to a later date for further proceedings.
