Sowore Explains Absence from Opposition Summit

Activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has explained why he declined an invitation to attend a recent opposition summit, stating that Nigeria needs a credible alternative rather than a coalition of recycled political actors.

In a statement, Sowore said his decision was based on principle, arguing that many of the figures involved in the summit had previously held power without delivering meaningful change. He maintained that simply rebranding old political structures would not address the country’s challenges.

According to him, true opposition should be rooted in fresh ideas, accountability, and a commitment to genuine reform. He stressed that Nigerians deserve leadership that breaks away from what he described as a cycle of failed governance.

Sowore also questioned the effectiveness of alliances formed without a clear ideological foundation, noting that such gatherings often prioritize political convenience over real solutions.

His comments have sparked reactions across the political landscape, with some supporting his stance on the need for new leadership, while others argue that broad coalitions are necessary to challenge the ruling establishment.

The development highlights ongoing debates within Nigeria’s opposition space over strategy, leadership, and the path toward credible political alternatives.
