ONDO BANS OKADA OPERATIONS OVER TRAFFIC LAW VIOLATIONS
The Ondo State Government has restricted the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, on some routes in Akure, the state capital, as part of efforts to improve traffic management and enforce road regulations.
The Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Transportation, Olumuyiwa Ogunyemi, announced the restriction, saying the affected routes were identified as part of measures to ease traffic congestion and improve road safety.
Under the new arrangement, okada riders approaching from the Police Officers’ Mess axis will be restricted to designated points, while riders coming through the First Bank area in Alagbaka will be required to terminate their operations around the Teaching Service Commission area.
The government also directed commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators using some major roads and areas around Alagbaka and the Post Office to relocate to designated points as part of the new traffic management measures.
Ogunyemi warned road users, including okada riders, tricycle operators and motorists, against violating traffic regulations. He said offenders, particularly those who disregard traffic lights, would be arrested and prosecuted.
The government said it would continue with public sensitisation before intensifying enforcement. Residents were urged to cooperate with the authorities, obey traffic signals, use designated bus stops and comply with road signs as the state works to improve traffic flow and safety in Akure.
