NBA Tackles Makinde Over Poor Judiciary Funding in Oyo

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ibadan branch, has criticized Seyi Makinde over what it described as inadequate funding of the judiciary in Oyo State.

In a statement, the association raised concerns about deteriorating conditions in the state’s judicial system, citing non-functional courts, poor infrastructure, and a lack of operational vehicles for magistrates. The NBA warned that these challenges are hampering the effective administration of justice and delaying court proceedings.

According to the Ibadan branch, insufficient budgetary allocation and delayed releases of funds have left many courts struggling to operate efficiently. The group stressed that a well-funded judiciary is critical to upholding the rule of law and ensuring timely access to justice for citizens.

The lawyers’ body called on the state government to prioritize judicial funding, improve court facilities, and provide necessary logistics for judicial officers. It also urged authorities to ensure full financial autonomy for the judiciary, in line with constitutional provisions.

Efforts to get an official response from the state government were ongoing at the time of filing this report. However, observers say the development highlights ongoing concerns about the state of judicial infrastructure and funding across parts of the country.

The NBA reaffirmed its commitment to advocating reforms that will strengthen the justice system and enhance public confidence in the judiciary.
