Jigawa Tanker Explosion Death Toll Rises To 167

The tragic fuel tanker explosion in Majiya town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has resulted in the loss of 167 lives, as confirmed by Governor Umar Namadi.

 

This revelation came during a condolence visit from Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, at the Government House in Dutse on Thursday evening.

 

Governor Namadi expressed his sorrow over the devastating incident, stating, “As of Thursday evening, 167 lives had been lost in the fire disaster.”

He further disclosed that 67 individuals are currently receiving medical treatment for various injuries sustained during the explosion, with care being provided in facilities both within and outside the state.

 

In recognition of the tragedy, Governor Namadi expressed profound gratitude to the Kano State Government for its support during this challenging time.

 

He highlighted the N100 million donation from Kano State, assuring that the funds would be utilized effectively to assist the victims and their families.

The tragic event has drawn global condolences from many, with sympathies extended to the affected families. A mass burial was conducted for the initial 147 victims, who reportedly perished while attempting to scoop fuel from the wrecked tanker.

In response to the incident, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion.

 

A statement from the agency outlined, “The team will assess the circumstances surrounding the crash and the explosion to identify causal factors and provide safety recommendations aimed at preventing future occurrences.”

 

The NSIB also extended heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this catastrophic accident, affirming their commitment to uncovering the cause of the explosion and ensuring that valuable safety lessons are learned to avert such tragedies in the future.
