INEC Fixes June 20 for By-Elections in Six States

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced June 20, 2026, as the date for by-elections in six states to fill vacant seats in the National and State Assemblies.

According to the commission, the polls will be conducted alongside the Ekiti State Governorship Election, a move aimed at optimizing logistics and reducing the cost of election management. INEC said the affected constituencies cut across different geopolitical zones, though specific details of the vacancies are expected to be published in the official timetable and schedule of activities.

INEC officials noted that preparations are already underway, including the deployment of personnel, materials, and security coordination to ensure a smooth process. The commission also reiterated its commitment to transparent and credible elections, urging political parties to adhere strictly to campaign regulations and timelines.

“The conduct of simultaneous elections is part of our effort to improve efficiency without compromising the integrity of the process,” an INEC spokesperson stated.

Political parties are expected to begin primaries in line with the timetable, while voters in the affected areas have been encouraged to verify their registration status and collect their Permanent Voter Cards ahead of the exercise.

Observers say the convergence of the by-elections with the Ekiti governorship poll could heighten political activity and voter turnout, while also testing INEC’s logistical capacity to manage multiple elections on the same day.
