INEC, DSS Probe Alleged Voter Data Leak as Atiku Raises Concerns
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Department of State Services (DSS) have commenced investigations into an alleged leak of voter information from the electoral body’s database following concerns raised by former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
Atiku called for a comprehensive and transparent probe into the matter, warning that any breach of voter data could undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process. He urged relevant authorities to determine the source of the alleged leak and ensure that the integrity of the voter register is protected.
The former vice president emphasized the importance of safeguarding citizens’ personal information, describing electoral databases as critical national assets that require the highest level of security. He also called for accountability if any wrongdoing is established during the investigation.
In response, INEC assured Nigerians that it is taking the allegations seriously and is working with security agencies to assess the claims and verify the extent of any potential breach. The commission reiterated its commitment to protecting voter data and maintaining the credibility of the electoral system.
Security experts have noted that public trust in elections depends heavily on the security of electoral infrastructure, stressing the need for continuous monitoring, cybersecurity upgrades, and swift responses to potential threats.
As investigations continue, stakeholders are calling for transparency and timely updates to reassure citizens that the nation’s electoral database remains secure ahead of future elections.
