FG TELLS UNIVERSITIES: FOUR-YEAR COURSES MUST END IN FOUR YEARS
The Federal Government has directed universities to ensure that four-year degree programmes are completed within the stipulated period, as part of efforts to reduce delays in students’ academic journeys.
The government also plans to expand the membership of its implementation and monitoring committee to include academic and non-academic staff unions across tertiary institutions.
The move is aimed at improving coordination between university management and staff unions, addressing disputes and preventing industrial actions that often disrupt academic calendars.
Strikes by university workers have repeatedly affected students’ studies, forcing many to spend longer than expected completing their degree programmes.
The government’s proposed measures are expected to strengthen engagement with unions and improve monitoring of academic activities across tertiary institutions.
However, achieving the four-year target will depend on several factors, including stable academic calendars, adequate funding, sufficient facilities and cooperation between university authorities and staff unions.
