FG, Partners Review COVID-19 Gains, Plan for Future Health Threats

Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government and its development partners have reviewed Nigeria’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting significant gains in healthcare delivery and preparedness while outlining strategies to address future public health emergencies.

At the review meeting, stakeholders assessed interventions implemented during the pandemic, including disease surveillance, laboratory capacity expansion, vaccine deployment, and emergency response coordination.

Officials noted that the COVID-19 experience helped strengthen Nigeria’s health system by improving infrastructure, boosting workforce capacity, and enhancing collaboration among health institutions and international partners.

The participants emphasized the need to sustain the progress made and build more resilient health systems capable of responding effectively to emerging diseases and other public health threats.

According to the Federal Government, lessons learned from the pandemic will guide future investments in healthcare, emergency preparedness, and epidemic response mechanisms.

Development partners also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to improve health security, strengthen surveillance systems, and protect communities from future outbreaks.

The review concluded with a renewed call for increased funding, stronger partnerships, and continuous capacity building to ensure the country remains prepared for future health challenges.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that the gains achieved during the COVID-19 response would serve as a foundation for a more resilient and responsive healthcare system in Nigeria.
