FG DISPUTES WORLD BANK’S REVENUE FIGURES, DISMISSES DEBT CONCERNS

The Federal Government has challenged the World Bank’s assessment of Nigeria’s revenue figures, dismissing concerns that rising interest payments could threaten the country’s debt sustainability.
The government disagreed with the figures presented by the international financial institution, signalling differences in how both parties assess Nigeria’s revenue performance and ability to manage its debt obligations.
The World Bank has raised concerns about the pressure debt-servicing costs place on Nigeria’s public finances, particularly the share of government revenue used to pay interest on existing loans.
However, the Federal Government maintains that the country’s debt position should be assessed using its own calculations and broader economic indicators.
The debate comes amid ongoing efforts by the government to improve revenue generation, manage public expenditure and sustain economic growth.
Economists have often highlighted the importance of increasing government revenue to reduce the pressure of debt repayments on public finances and create more room for spending on infrastructure and essential services.
The disagreement underscores the need for clarity on Nigeria’s revenue figures and debt indicators as concerns continue over the country’s fiscal position.
