Anambra Residents Seek Soludo’s Intervention Over Soaring House Rents
Awka, Anambra State – Residents of Anambra State have called on Governor Charles Soludo to urgently intervene in the rising cost of housing across the state, as escalating rents continue to place a heavy burden on families and low-income earners.
Many residents lament that the annual rent for a standard two-bedroom apartment in major urban centres such as Onitsha, Awka, and Nnewi now averages about N1.5 million, with some landlords demanding even higher rates depending on location and property features.
According to tenants, the sharp increase in rental costs has forced many families to relocate to less developed areas, share apartments, or spend a significant portion of their income on accommodation.
Speaking to reporters, residents described the situation as unsustainable, noting that salaries and business incomes have not kept pace with the rising cost of living. They urged the state government to introduce policies that would regulate excessive rent increases and make housing more affordable.
A trader in Awka said the housing crisis is affecting small business owners and civil servants the most. “Many people can no longer afford decent accommodation within the city. Every year, landlords increase rent without considering the economic realities facing tenants,” the resident said.
Housing experts attribute the surge in rent to increasing demand for accommodation, rising construction costs, inflation, and rapid urbanisation in key commercial centres across the state. They argue that more investment in affordable housing projects could help ease the pressure on residents.
The appeal comes amid growing concerns over housing affordability in several parts of the state. Reports indicate that the Anambra government has previously considered measures aimed at regulating the housing sector and addressing rent-related challenges.
Residents are now calling on Governor Soludo to engage stakeholders, including landlords, property developers, and housing agencies, to find lasting solutions that will protect tenants while encouraging investment in the real estate sector.
They expressed hope that swift government intervention would help stabilize rental prices and improve access to affordable housing for thousands of residents across Anambra State.
