Ganduje Blames Neglect of PWDs for Rising Street Begging
Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Ganduje, has attributed the increasing rate of street begging across Nigeria to the longstanding neglect and marginalization of persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Speaking at a public forum on social inclusion, Ganduje said the failure of institutions and society to provide adequate support systems for vulnerable groups has pushed many individuals with disabilities into begging as a means of survival. He stressed that the issue should not be viewed merely as a social nuisance but as a reflection of deeper systemic gaps.
According to him, limited access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities has left many PWDs without viable means of livelihood. He called for urgent government intervention, including the implementation of inclusive policies, vocational training programs, and targeted social welfare initiatives.
Ganduje also urged policymakers to fully enforce existing disability laws and strengthen institutions responsible for protecting the rights of PWDs. He noted that empowering persons with disabilities would not only reduce street begging but also enable them to contribute meaningfully to national development.
He further appealed to state governments, private sector stakeholders, and civil society organizations to collaborate in creating a more inclusive environment. Measures such as accessible infrastructure, financial support schemes, and public awareness campaigns were highlighted as critical steps toward addressing the problem.
Observers say the remarks have reignited discussions on social protection and inclusivity in Nigeria, with many advocating for a shift from charity-based approaches to rights-based frameworks that prioritize dignity and equal opportunity for all citizens.
As concerns over street begging continue to grow in major cities, stakeholders agree that addressing the root causes—particularly the marginalization of vulnerable populations—will be key to achieving lasting solutions.
