FCT Residents Lament Rising Cost of Tomatoes in Abuja Markets

Abuja, Nigeria – Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have expressed concern over the rising cost of tomatoes in markets across Abuja, attributing the situation to seasonal scarcity, high transportation costs, and post-harvest losses.

A survey of major markets in the capital revealed significant increases in tomato prices, placing additional pressure on household budgets amid the rising cost of living.

Traders said reduced supply from major producing states, coupled with increased transportation expenses, has contributed to the surge in prices. They also cited poor storage facilities and post-harvest losses as factors affecting the availability of the commodity.

Many residents lamented that tomatoes, a staple ingredient in most Nigerian meals, have become increasingly difficult to afford, forcing some families to reduce consumption or seek alternatives.

Market operators expressed hope that prices would stabilize as supply improves during the peak harvest season, but warned that persistent logistical and storage challenges could continue to impact the market.

Agriculture experts have called for greater investment in cold storage facilities, improved transportation infrastructure, and support for farmers to reduce losses and ensure a steady supply of produce.

The development comes as consumers across the country continue to grapple with rising food prices and inflationary pressures affecting essential commodities.
