EXPLAINER: Why Jonathan May Not Be Eligible to Contest in 2027

Questions have resurfaced over whether former President, , is eligible to contest Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.

The debate centres on provisions of the 1999 Constitution, particularly Section 137(1)(b), which states that a person shall not be elected to the office of President more than twice.

Jonathan first assumed office in 2010 following the death of then-President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and subsequently won the 2011 presidential election, serving until 2015.

Legal interpretations differ on whether his initial tenure should count as a full term. However, a 2018 constitutional amendment introduced a clause preventing individuals who take the presidential oath to complete another person’s term from being elected more than once afterward.

Analysts argue that this amendment could limit Jonathan to only one additional term after completing Yar’Adua’s tenure, which he already served between 2011 and 2015.

Supporters of Jonathan, however, maintain that he remains eligible, citing differing legal opinions and the need for judicial interpretation to settle the matter conclusively.

Constitutional lawyers say the issue would likely require a definitive ruling by the courts if Jonathan decides to contest.

The discussion has reignited political debates ahead of the 2027 elections, with stakeholders closely watching developments around potential candidates.

As of now, Jonathan has not made any official declaration regarding his intention to run, leaving the matter largely speculative.
