Iran Envoy Rejects U.S. Role in Choosing Country’s Next Leader
Abuja, Nigeria — Iran’s envoy to Nigeria has firmly rejected suggestions that the United States should have a role in determining the country’s next leader, insisting that Iran alone will decide its political future.
The envoy criticized remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently suggested that Washington should be involved in selecting Iran’s next supreme leader following the death of Ali Khamenei.
According to the Iranian diplomat, leadership decisions in Iran are strictly internal matters and cannot be influenced by foreign governments. He emphasized that Iran has established constitutional processes for choosing its leaders and will follow those procedures without external interference.
The envoy also accused the United States of attempting to interfere in Iran’s sovereignty, stressing that the country will independently determine its leadership and future direction.
Trump had earlier dismissed the possibility of Khamenei’s son succeeding him and suggested that the United States should have a say in the leadership transition. Analysts say the exchange highlights growing tensions between Tehran and Washington amid uncertainty over Iran’s political succession and broader geopolitical developments in the Middle East.
