Gas Shortage Triggers Prolonged Power Outages Across Nigeria
Nigeria is experiencing widespread electricity disruptions following a severe gas supply shortage that has significantly reduced power generation nationwide.
Industry sources confirmed that electricity output dropped to about 4,300 megawatts, far below the country’s energy demand, as several thermal power plants struggled to secure adequate gas supplies needed for operations. The shortage has resulted in extended blackouts affecting homes, businesses, and critical services across multiple states.
Power sector stakeholders attributed the situation to challenges in gas production, pipeline constraints, and payment issues within the energy value chain, which continue to hinder consistent fuel delivery to generating companies.
Distribution companies have consequently implemented heavier load-shedding schedules, leaving many communities with limited daily electricity supply. Businesses, particularly small and medium-scale enterprises, have raised concerns over rising operational costs due to increased reliance on generators.
Energy analysts warn that recurring gas supply disruptions expose Nigeria’s heavy dependence on thermal power generation and highlight the urgent need to diversify energy sources and strengthen infrastructure.
Authorities are reportedly engaging gas producers and power generation firms to restore stable supply and improve electricity output, though no clear timeline has been announced for full restoration of normal power levels.
