Ramadan: Sultan of Sokoto Calls for Moon Sighting on Tuesday
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has urged Muslims across Nigeria to commence the sighting of the Ramadan crescent on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, in preparation for the start of the holy month.
In a statement issued through the Sultanate Council, the revered Islamic leader called on the faithful to look out for the new moon, which will determine the official beginning of Ramadan, one of the most significant periods in the Islamic calendar. He emphasized that reports of verified sightings should be promptly communicated to the appropriate authorities for confirmation.
The directive aligns with established Islamic traditions, where the appearance of the crescent moon marks the transition into Ramadan, a month devoted to fasting, prayer, reflection, and charity.
The Sultan also encouraged Muslims to use the period to pray for peace, unity, and national progress, underscoring the spiritual importance of the season. He reiterated the need for adherence to religious guidelines and cooperation with official announcements regarding the commencement of fasting.
The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) is expected to formally declare the start of Ramadan following the verification of credible moon sighting reports.
