Electoral Act: Senate’s Approach Ensures Transparent Elections – Orji Kalu

Abuja — Former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has commended the Nigerian Senate for approving the electronic transmission of election results in the amended Electoral Act, describing the move as a major step toward ensuring transparency and credibility in the country’s electoral process.

Kalu said the Senate’s decision reflects a collective commitment by lawmakers to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and restore public confidence in elections. According to him, the inclusion of electronic transmission of results would significantly reduce electoral malpractices, particularly result manipulation during collation.

“The Senate has demonstrated courage and patriotism by supporting reforms that promote transparency, accountability and credibility in our elections,” Kalu said. “Electronic transmission of results will help eliminate rigging and ensure that the will of the people is truly reflected.”

The lawmaker noted that technology-driven elections are now a global standard and stressed that Nigeria must not lag behind in adopting modern electoral practices. He added that the amended Electoral Act would enhance the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and improve voter confidence.

Kalu further urged relevant stakeholders, including INEC and security agencies, to ensure effective implementation of the new provisions, particularly in areas with limited technological infrastructure. He expressed optimism that with proper planning and investment, electronic transmission would succeed across the country.

The Senate recently approved the use of electronic devices for the accreditation of voters and transmission of results, a provision that has been widely praised by civil society groups and democracy advocates.

Senator Kalu reaffirmed his support for reforms aimed at deepening democracy, stating that credible elections remain the foundation for good governance and national development.
