PHOTOS: CDS Vows to Reposition Nigerian Military as People-Centred, Ethical Force

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) has reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces to reposition the military as a people-centred, ethical, and highly professional institution dedicated to national security and public trust.

Speaking at a recent official engagement attended by senior military officers and stakeholders, the CDS emphasised that the military remains focused on protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty while strengthening its relationship with civilians across the country. He noted that professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights remain central to ongoing reforms within the Armed Forces.

According to the CDS, efforts to reposition the military include enhanced training, improved welfare for personnel, stricter adherence to rules of engagement, and sustained collaboration with local communities in conflict-affected areas. He stressed that winning the confidence and support of citizens is critical to addressing security challenges nationwide.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria are committed to operating as a force that the people can trust—one that upholds ethical standards, respects the rule of law, and remains responsive to the needs of the nation,” he said.

The CDS also highlighted the importance of joint operations among the Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as cooperation with other security agencies, to ensure a coordinated and effective response to evolving threats. He praised officers and personnel for their sacrifices and resilience in the face of complex security operations.

Photos from the event captured the CDS inspecting a guard of honour, interacting with senior commanders, and addressing troops, underscoring the leadership’s hands-on approach to military reform and morale building.

The renewed pledge comes amid ongoing security operations across the country, as the Federal Government continues to prioritise reforms aimed at strengthening national defence, promoting accountability, and fostering civil-military relations.

The Defence Headquarters reiterated that the repositioning agenda is an ongoing process, with the ultimate goal of building a modern, professional, and people-focused military capable of meeting Nigeria’s present and future security needs.
