2027: ‘Leave me out,’ Dogara reacts to speculation over replacing Shettima
Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has dismissed speculations suggesting that he could replace Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate ahead of the 2027 general election.
Dogara, who spoke on Sunday, urged political actors and commentators to leave him out of what he described as unfounded and premature discussions about the 2027 presidential race. He made it clear that he was not involved in, nor aware of, any move to alter the current presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Reacting to the reports circulating in some sections of the media, the former Speaker said the speculation was unnecessary and distracting, especially at a time when the focus should be on governance and addressing the country’s pressing challenges.
He also reaffirmed his respect for President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima, noting that decisions concerning party tickets and succession were matters for the APC leadership and party organs, not subjects for public conjecture.
Dogara’s reaction follows growing political conversations around possible realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, with several prominent figures being mentioned in various speculative scenarios. However, the former Speaker maintained that he should not be drawn into such narratives.
The Presidency and the APC have not officially commented on the speculation surrounding the 2027 ticket, while Vice President Shettima continues to discharge his duties alongside President Tinubu.
