‘Emi Lokan’ – Peter Obi Got It Wrong – Doyin Okupe Defends Tinubu
1 min readFormer presidential spokesperson, Doyin Okupe, has tackled the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, over the ’emi lokan’ mantra used by President Bola Tinubu during the campaigns.
According to Okupe, the ’emi lokan’ statement used by Tinubu prior to the 2023 elections was not a demand for the presidency but an appeal to Yoruba delegates ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries to choose its candidates.
Recall that Peter Obi, during a recent podcast, called out the Yoruba region for allegedly demanding Nigeria’s presidency through Tinubu and mocked them for the hardship that has plagued the country since Tinubu assumed power in May 2023.

The statement by Obi has attracted various reactions and comments.
In his own reaction, Okupe, who was, at a time, the Director-General for Obi’s presidential campaign team, said the former Anambra State Governor missed the mark with his submission.
Taking to his account on the X platform (formerly Twitter), Okupe wrote on Monday: “OBI GOT IT WRONG ON “EMI LO KAN”
“Tinubu as a Presidential Aspirant was appealing for votes of the Ogun state delegates, in Yoruba, to the Apc convention.
“Haven helped to form the party,& helped to make Buhari President, he declares, I ( not Yoruba) is the next in line.”
