25m Elderly Nigerians Face Poverty Risk by 2050 — LASU Don
A professor at (LASU) has warned that about 25 million elderly Nigerians could face poverty by 2050 if urgent measures are not taken.
The academic attributed the looming crisis to weak social security systems, rising inflation, and the gradual erosion of traditional family support structures.
He noted that many older citizens lack sustainable income sources, making them increasingly vulnerable to economic shocks and rising living costs.
The professor called for the development of comprehensive social protection policies, including pension reforms and welfare programmes targeted at the ageing population.
He also emphasized the need for increased awareness and planning for retirement, both at individual and national levels.
Experts say Nigeria’s growing population and changing socio-economic dynamics are putting pressure on existing support systems for the elderly.
They warned that without strategic intervention, the country could face significant social and economic challenges in caring for its ageing population.
The development has sparked renewed calls for government action to strengthen safety nets and ensure a dignified life for senior citizens.
