VIDEO: Sowore Falls During Abuja Protest as Security Operatives Fire Teargas
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, reportedly fell during a Democracy Day protest in Abuja after security operatives dispersed demonstrators with teargas.
According to reports, the incident occurred as protesters gathered in the Federal Capital Territory to express concerns over governance, economic challenges, and other national issues. Eyewitnesses said security personnel deployed teargas canisters in an attempt to disperse the crowd, leading to confusion among participants.
Videos circulating on social media appeared to show Sowore stumbling and falling amid the commotion as protesters hurried to avoid the effects of the teargas. He was subsequently assisted by supporters and fellow demonstrators at the scene.
Despite the disruption, protesters continued to voice their demands, calling for reforms and improved living conditions. Organizers maintained that the demonstration was peaceful and conducted within the framework of citizens’ constitutional rights to freedom of expression and assembly.
Security agencies have yet to issue a detailed statement regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident. However, authorities have consistently stressed the need to maintain public order during protests and other public gatherings.
The event has generated reactions from civil society groups and political observers, with many renewing calls for dialogue and respect for democratic rights while ensuring public safety.
No serious injuries were immediately reported following the incident, although tensions remained high as security operatives monitored activities in parts of the city.
