Stakeholders Demand More Attention to Men’s Mental Health
Mental health advocates, healthcare professionals, and community leaders have called for increased attention to men’s mental health in Nigeria, stressing the need to address societal attitudes that discourage men from expressing their emotions and seeking support.
The stakeholders noted that cultural expectations often place immense pressure on men to appear strong and self-reliant, leading many to suppress emotional struggles and avoid discussing mental health challenges.
Speaking at various awareness events and forums, experts warned that the stigma surrounding mental health issues among men can contribute to anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and other psychological conditions. They emphasized the importance of creating safe spaces where men can openly discuss their concerns without fear of judgment or discrimination.
The advocates also called for stronger public awareness campaigns, improved access to mental health services, and policies that prioritize psychological well-being across all segments of society.
According to the stakeholders, encouraging men to seek professional help when needed is essential to reducing the burden of untreated mental health conditions and improving overall public health outcomes.
They further urged families, workplaces, educational institutions, and religious organizations to play active roles in promoting mental wellness and supporting individuals facing emotional and psychological challenges.
The call comes amid growing global recognition of the importance of mental health and the need to address barriers that prevent people, particularly men, from accessing the care and support they require.
Stakeholders expressed optimism that sustained advocacy, education, and investment in mental healthcare would help foster a more supportive environment and improve the well-being of men across the country.
