PDP Lawmakers Accuse Party Governors Of Plotting To Keep Damagum In Power

A coalition of federal opposition lawmakers has raised an alarm over an alleged plot by certain Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors and 24 state party chairmen to keep the party’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, in office until 2027.
The lawmakers, led by Ikenga Ugochinyere, who represents the Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency in Imo State, made the accusation during a press conference held in Akokwa, Imo State.
According to Ugochinyere, the strategy is part of a broader plan to undermine the opposition party ahead of the next presidential elections.

“Today, our nation faces significant economic and political challenges, but what’s missing is a vibrant, responsible opposition. The PDP is supposed to lead this charge, yet it is being hijacked by political charlatans who are turning it into a tool for the ruling party,” Ugochinyere said.
He further alleged that some PDP governors and other influential figures within the party were deliberately preventing the National Executive Committee (NEC) from selecting a substantive chairman from the North-Central zone, as initially planned.
Instead, they want Damagum to remain in power for another three years, thus compromising the party’s ability to field a strong presidential candidate for 2027.
“They want Umar Damagum to continue as the National Chairman until 2027, which will pave the way for a weak candidate in the presidential race. This is nothing but a plot to sabotage the party and the nation,” Ugochinyere claimed.
The lawmakers also accused PDP leaders of fostering an alliance with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including meeting with APC officials in London, a claim that has yet to be confirmed.
Ugochinyere emphasized the importance of upholding the party’s integrity and honoring the sacrifices made by its founding members, such as Alex Ekwueme, Jerry Gana, Atiku Abubakar, and Olusegun Obasanjo, who played key roles in the establishment of the party in 1998.
