OBI VOWS TO RESTORE FUEL SUBSIDY IF ELECTED

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, has pledged to restore fuel subsidy if elected president.

Obi made the declaration during a town hall meeting in Nasarawa State, where he outlined his position on Nigeria’s economic challenges and the rising cost of living.

The former Anambra State governor’s promise places fuel subsidy policy back at the centre of the national economic debate, particularly as Nigerians continue to grapple with petrol prices and the cost of transportation.

Fuel subsidy remains a major issue in Nigeria’s economic discussions, with supporters of its removal pointing to the financial burden on government revenue, while critics have raised concerns about its impact on household expenses and businesses.

Obi’s proposed return to subsidy would represent a change in the current policy direction. However, questions remain about how such a programme would be funded, managed and sustained without placing additional pressure on public finances.

His comments are expected to generate further debate about the economic policies and priorities of presidential candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.
