NIGERIAN FOOTBALL ENDURING ‘WORST TIME IN HISTORY’ — ODEGBAMI
Former Nigeria international Segun Odegbami has described the current state of Nigerian football as the “worst time” in the country’s history, citing challenges affecting the national teams, domestic league and administration of the sport.
Odegbami, a member of Nigeria’s 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team, said recent setbacks had highlighted the difficulties facing Nigerian football. He expressed concern about the country’s failure to qualify for successive FIFA World Cup tournaments.
The former striker also pointed to difficulties involving other national teams, the domestic league and the broader football development structure. He argued that the problems facing Nigerian football go beyond performances on the pitch.
According to Odegbami, urgent reforms are needed in areas such as grassroots development, player discovery, coaching, football academies and administration. He said a coordinated approach would be necessary to rebuild the sport and restore confidence in its various structures.
He also expressed concern about the condition of some major football stadiums across the country, saying the deterioration of sporting infrastructure has affected the development and hosting of football activities.
Odegbami’s comments come amid continuing discussions about the future direction of Nigerian football and the performance of the national teams. He called for greater attention to the structural challenges affecting the sport if Nigeria is to return to sustained success on the international stage.
