Manufacturers Withdraw Suit, Unlock 1.55 Million Smart Meter Procurement
The Association of Meter Manufacturers of Nigeria (AMMON) has withdrawn its lawsuit against the Federal Government, paving the way for the procurement and deployment of 1.55 million smart electricity meters across the country.
The withdrawal, filed through a Notice of Discontinuance at the Federal High Court in Kano, followed high-level discussions led by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, involving AMMON and key government agencies. The move brings an end to months of legal uncertainty that had stalled several metering programmes aimed at closing Nigeria’s electricity metering gap.
The earlier court action had halted the bidding process for major initiatives, including the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), the Meter Acquisition Fund Phase 3 (MAF 3), and the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), delaying the rollout of smart meters to electricity consumers nationwide.
The Federal Ministry of Power said the resolution reflects the government’s commitment to promoting local manufacturing while ensuring transparent and competitive procurement. The agreement also aligns with the Federal Government’s industrial development agenda by increasing support for indigenous meter manufacturers.
Industry stakeholders believe the settlement will accelerate efforts to reduce estimated billing, improve electricity service delivery, and strengthen Nigeria’s local metering industry. With the legal obstacle removed, procurement activities are expected to resume immediately, bringing the country closer to bridging its long-standing metering deficit.
