LIBYA’S PARLIAMENT SPEAKER OUSTED AFTER 12 YEARS
Libya’s eastern-based House of Representatives has removed its longtime Speaker, Aguila Saleh, after nearly 12 years in office.
Lawmakers voted to replace Saleh with Al-Salhin Abdelnabi al-Obeidi, who represents the eastern city of Tobruk. The change followed growing discontent among members over Saleh’s leadership.
The parliament also approved new rules limiting the Speaker and deputy speakers to a single 12-month term, ending an arrangement that had been in place since the chamber’s first leadership election in 2014.
The move followed reported dissatisfaction among lawmakers, including concerns over decisions allegedly made without adequate consultation with members.
Saleh, a longtime ally of eastern military commander Khalifa Haftar, disputed the legality of the proceedings, arguing that the session approving the changes was not official and had no legal effect.
Libya remains divided between rival political administrations in the east and west, with efforts continuing to reunify the country’s institutions and pave the way for national elections.
