Lagos warns water vendors against illegal connections

2 min read

The Managing Director, Lagos Water Corporation, Muminu Badmus, has warned water operators in the state to desist from illegal connections to the corporation’s pipes, saying culprits will be prosecuted.

While urging the vendors to report leakages and ensure that they keep to standards, he said unregistered water vendors in the state would be sanctioned.

Badmus said this during a sensitisation meeting between the corporation and the Water Sellers Association to deliberate on the safety of water supply, a statement said on Monday.

“It is illegal to sell water obtained from LWC pipes without clearance from the corporation or connect to any water pipe laid by the corporation. It is also illegal to bottle and package water obtained from LWC pipes without clearance, as stated under the Lagos Water Sector Law No. 14a of 2004,” he added.

In his address, the Executive Secretary, Lagos State Water Regulatory Board, Mr. Ahmed Abdulahi, urged residents to migrate from borehole to LWC water.

He added that people who insisted on digging boreholes must have government permit and also consult experts.

The Assistant General Manager, LWC, Mrs. Azeezat Sadiq, urged the public to report leakages, vandalisation and burst pipes through the help lines: 07045973012 and 07045973013.

She also appealed to residents to pay their water rates promptly, as such money was used to procure chemicals such as Alum and Hydrated lime for water treatment.

Commending the LWC, the Assistant Chairman of Water Sellers Association in Lagos State, Mr. James Odedeyi, said members would comply with the demands of the corporation to ensure the safety of all residents.
