According to a statement from the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwajuaren, the convict was one of 30 suspected Internet fraudsters who were detained in Ado-Ekiti on April 26, 2022, during a sting operation in response to intelligence information on fraudster activity in the region.

The statement continued, “Investigation into the matter revealed that Olukayode, who currently has no defined job, was skilled in Internet fraud and had benefited from his fraudulent activities to the tune of several millions of naira, some of which he used to purchase a Mercedes Benz ML 350 for the sum of N13 million. He confessed to the crime.

Sesan Ola, the attorney for the EFCC, went over the case’s facts after the defendant entered a guilty plea.

Along with the fraudulent messages printed from his devices, he also offered the defendant’s extrajudicial statements, phones, an HP laptop, and the car that had been taken from him at the time of his arrest. All of these items were admitted into evidence.

In his ruling, Justice Sani stated that he thought the prosecution’s case had merit and that he should thus be found guilty.

On counts one and two, the judge gave Olukayode a one-year prison sentence each, with the possibility of a N300,000 fine.

The iPhone 12, Infinix X65, HP laptop, Mercedes Benz, and other items seized from the convict were also ordered by the court to be forfeited to the Federal Government.
