Food Prices Jump in April 2026 — NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a rise in the prices of several food commodities across Nigeria in April 2026, highlighting continued pressure on household spending and the cost of living.
According to the bureau’s latest price watch report, key food items including tomatoes, beans, garri, onions, ginger, and other staples recorded month-on-month increases during the period. The upward trend reflects ongoing challenges affecting food supply, transportation, and market distribution across parts of the country.
The report noted that rising food prices continue to impact consumers, particularly low-income households that spend a significant portion of their earnings on essential food items. Analysts say factors such as inflation, logistics costs, and seasonal fluctuations may have contributed to the increase.
Despite efforts by authorities to improve food production and stabilize prices, concerns remain over affordability and food security. Stakeholders have called for measures to boost agricultural output, strengthen supply chains, and reduce the cost of moving goods to markets nationwide.
The latest figures underscore the persistent challenge of food inflation, with many Nigerians hoping for improved market conditions in the coming months.
