CAF MAY REVERSE AFCON FOUR-YEAR CYCLE PLAN

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is reportedly considering a return to holding the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) every two years, potentially reversing plans announced in late 2025 to move the tournament to a four-year cycle.
The proposed change to a four-year format was intended to reshape the African football calendar and align the continental competition more closely with other major international tournaments.
However, the latest development suggests that CAF could reconsider the decision amid discussions about the tournament’s future schedule and the interests of African football stakeholders.
A return to a two-year cycle would preserve AFCON’s traditional format, giving national teams regular opportunities to compete for the continental title.
The competition is one of Africa’s biggest sporting events, attracting millions of viewers and providing significant commercial opportunities for participating countries and sponsors.
CAF has yet to formally confirm a reversal of its earlier plan, meaning the tournament’s long-term schedule remains subject to further clarification.
