May Day: NLC, TUC Endorse Sokoto Governor for Second Term
Nigeria’s major labour unions, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have endorsed Ahmed Aliyu for a second term as governor of Sokoto State.
The endorsement was announced during activities marking International Workers’ Day, where labour leaders commended the governor’s performance, particularly in workers’ welfare and timely payment of salaries.
According to union representatives, the Aliyu administration has demonstrated commitment to improving working conditions, implementing pro-labour policies, and maintaining industrial harmony in the state. They noted that consistent salary payments and attention to workers’ concerns were key factors behind their decision.
“We recognize a government that prioritizes workers’ welfare, and Sokoto State has shown that commitment,” a labour leader stated during the event.
In his response, Governor Aliyu expressed appreciation for the endorsement, pledging to sustain and expand policies that benefit workers and residents if given another mandate.
The development is expected to shape the political landscape ahead of the next gubernatorial election in the state, with analysts suggesting the backing of organized labour could boost the governor’s re-election prospects.
