Fulani, Tiv Leaders Declare End to Killings After Taraba Peace Meeting

Leaders of Fulani and Tiv communities in Taraba State have declared an end to hostilities following a high-level peace meeting aimed at resolving years of violent clashes between the groups.

The meeting, which brought together traditional rulers, community elders, youth representatives, and security officials, focused on addressing the root causes of the conflict and charting a path toward lasting peace. At the end of the deliberations, both sides agreed to cease all forms of violence and work collectively to rebuild trust among their communities.

Speaking after the meeting, representatives of the Fulani and Tiv groups emphasized the urgent need to end the cycle of reprisals that has led to loss of lives, displacement of families, and destruction of property across affected areas. They noted that the continued conflict had not only strained intercommunal relations but also hindered economic activities such as farming and herding.

As part of the resolutions reached, the leaders agreed to establish a joint peace committee that will monitor compliance with the ceasefire and mediate disputes before they escalate. They also pledged to promote dialogue at the grassroots level and discourage inflammatory rhetoric that could reignite tensions.

Security agencies present at the meeting assured residents of increased surveillance and rapid response to any breach of the agreement. They urged community members to cooperate with authorities and report suspicious activities.

Observers say the peace declaration marks a significant step toward stability in Taraba State, which has witnessed recurring clashes between farmers and herders. However, they caution that sustained commitment from all stakeholders will be critical to ensuring that the agreement translates into lasting peace on the ground.

Residents have expressed cautious optimism, hoping that the renewed commitment by both sides will usher in a period of coexistence, economic recovery, and social harmony in the region.
