Group Urges Ogun Government to Legalise Safe Abortion Guidelines
A women’s rights advocacy group has called on the Ogun State Government to legalise and implement safe abortion guidelines, arguing that the move would help protect vulnerable women and reduce maternal deaths linked to unsafe procedures.
The group said many women, particularly victims of rape, incest, and other forms of abuse, face significant health risks due to limited access to safe and regulated reproductive healthcare services.
According to the advocates, the absence of clear guidelines has contributed to the prevalence of unsafe abortion practices, which remain a major cause of preventable maternal injuries and deaths. They stressed that legal and medically supervised procedures would improve health outcomes and safeguard women’s lives.
The organisation urged the state government to work with healthcare professionals, legal experts, and civil society groups to develop policies that prioritize women’s health, dignity, and access to quality medical care.
The group also called for increased public awareness on reproductive health issues and stronger support systems for women facing crisis pregnancies, emphasizing the need for a compassionate and rights-based approach.
The appeal comes amid ongoing debates over reproductive healthcare policies in Nigeria, with advocates pushing for reforms aimed at reducing maternal mortality and improving healthcare access for women and girls.
