WIMBIZ Condemns Sexual Assault at Delta Festival, Calls for Passage of Gender Bill

The Women in Management, Business and Public Service (WIMBIZ) has strongly condemned a reported case of sexual assault that occurred during a recent festival in Delta State, calling for justice for the victim and greater protection for women in public spaces.

In a statement released by the organisation, WIMBIZ described the incident as disturbing and unacceptable, stressing that acts of sexual violence must not be tolerated under any circumstance. The group urged relevant authorities to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. ⚖️

WIMBIZ also called for stronger institutional measures to prevent such incidents, emphasizing the need for improved security and awareness during large public gatherings such as festivals and cultural events.

As part of its response, the organisation renewed its advocacy for the urgent passage of the Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill, a legislative proposal aimed at promoting gender equality, protecting women’s rights, and addressing discrimination in Nigeria.

According to WIMBIZ, the bill would provide a stronger legal framework to address gender-based violence, enhance protection for women and girls, and ensure equal opportunities across social, economic, and political spaces.

The organisation further urged the government, lawmakers, civil society groups, and community leaders to work collectively to create safer environments where women can participate freely in social and cultural activities without fear of harassment or violence.

WIMBIZ reaffirmed its commitment to advancing gender equality and supporting initiatives that promote justice, accountability, and the protection of women’s rights across Nigeria. ✊
