Seven key sporting events that rocked last week

It was a week in which we saw a bizarre penalty routine and the other Williams sister is almost at a landmark win.

Venus gets to 49

The other Williams – Venus, has won her 49th career title. The older Williams won her first title in 1998. Williams beat Misaki Doi of Japan 6-4, 6-2 to win the Taiwan Open, and she achieved this without dropping a set in the tournament. “I’ve had so much success in Asia; I feel like it’s very lucky to play here,” Williams said afterwards. The world No.7 may have to concentrate her career in Asia as that is where she has won her last three events.

Messi passes to Suarez via a penalty

We have always known that Lionel Messi is sprayed with some wanderlust but he took it almost into ethereal proportions when he passed the ball from the penalty spot to allow teammate, Luis Suarez, get his third goal against Celta Vigo – a match they finally won 6-1. And the rules backed him up, the ball must move forward – and not necessarily to the goalkeeper, and, indeed the ball moved forward from the spot, even though it went sideways forward!

Klay downs Curry in 3-point shooting contest

Everyone expected the Basketball ‘Messi’ Steph Curry to retain the 3-point contest at the All-Star weekend but his teammate, Klay Thompson had other ideas, as he shot an almost perfect array to take the title. He said afterwards that Curry had actually made him a better three-point shooter. “We love to shoot against each other. You know, I’ve never been on a team with someone who shoots it better than me, so it’s a privilege to work with him every day. He makes me that much better.” Talk of having your opponent in the same camp!Dortmund fans protest with tennis balls

Football fans are beginning to protest the apparent greed of football clubs in jacking up ticket prices across Europe. We saw Liverpool fans vote with their feet the other day but in Germany, Borussia Dortmund fans took their protest literally into their hands by launching hundreds of tennis balls onto the field of play in the 25th minute of the DFB Pokal match, away to VFB Stuttgart. The referee had to stop the match to allow officials remove the balls from the pitch. That is what is called throwing a tantrum!

Johnson sacked by Sunderland

Adam Johnson was sacked by Sunderland after he changed his plea to guilty on charges of sexual activity with a child and child grooming and he also confessed he was aware was underage. After this confession, Sunderland terminated his contract with immediate effect with Adidas also doing same to the 12-time capped England international. His must be a case of gaining too much advantage from an already advantageous position.

Aurier suspended for disparaging rant at Blanc and teammates

PSG have suspended defender, Serge Aurier, indefinitely for remarks made on social media platform, Periscope. Reports from Paris claim some of the club’s senior pros have said they will never play alongside the 23-year-old Cote d’Ivoire international again.

And his manager, Laurent Blanc, said he took the insults personally because he had to vouch for the defender before the Parisian club signed him in 2014. He also added that this generation should think more before saying things they then apologize for. “There are in this new generation a lot of people who spend their time apologizing but they should think first then they would not have to apologize all the time,” A word for the wise!

You need to watch this happen yourself! A Queensland State League side IN Australia conceded six goals in 63 minutes in the BLK Silver Boot third-place playoff against Holland Park Hawks with less than half an hour to play. But forward Lyndon Dykes, came off the bench to hit a hat-trick and help take the game to extra time – and they finally won the match 8-6. What a comeback!
