NDLEA Relocates To New Headquarters In Abuja

2 min read

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has officially inaugurated its new headquarters in the Jahi area of Abuja.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), emphasized that the move to the new facility, though still in its first phase, is a critical milestone in the agency’s strategic development.

Marwa explained that the new headquarters would accommodate the expanding workforce of the agency, which had previously struggled with space constraints in its former office at Gimbiya, Garki.

This is not 100% completed, but it is sufficiently functional for us to move in because we have to provide a better working environment for our expanding workforce. We needed this space to enhance our operations and ensure better coordination across our directorates,” Marwa said.

He revealed that the project would be completed with provisions from the 2025 budget, which would finalize the remaining construction phases.

Marwa also noted that the old headquarters in Gimbiya would continue to serve as an annex for some of the agency’s operations.

The relocation, which was commemorated with an interdenominational service, is part of a broader agenda to reposition the NDLEA for greater efficiency.

In the last three years under Marwa’s leadership, the agency has undergone a dramatic transformation, increasing its staff strength from 5,000 to 15,000, among other milestones.

“I’m glad we’ve finally moved into this facility after initial budgetary constraints. This is an important step towards consolidating our efforts in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking,” Marwa stated.

Also speaking at the event, NDLEA Secretary, Mr. Shadrach Haruna, praised Marwa’s leadership, citing his role in the agency’s growth and the monumental achievements it has recorded.

These include the promotion of officers, the opening of new vacancies, and the recent amendment of the agency’s enabling law by the National Assembly.

The ceremony, which was attended by officials from both local and international organizations, also featured prayers for Nigeria’s continued success in the fight against drugs. A commemorative plaque was unveiled to mark the occasion.

Marwa, in his remarks, extended gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his support, which he described as critical in the agency’s continued success.

He also acknowledged the contributions of local stakeholders, including the National Assembly, Judiciary, and the general public, in supporting the NDLEA’s mission.
