We Can’t Get Complacent – Iwobi Warns Super Eagles
Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has warned that Nigeria cannot afford to lower their guard as the team prepares for their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) round-of-16 clash, stressing that every match now demands maximum commitment.
Iwobi, who has been one of Nigeria’s standout performers at the tournament, said the knockout stage presents a completely different challenge from the group phase, where the Super Eagles finished with an impressive record.
“We can’t get complacent at this stage. This is knockout football, and anything can happen. We have to give 100 percent for the nation,” Iwobi said.
The Fulham star noted that past AFCON tournaments have shown that form in the group stage counts for little once the competition enters the knockout rounds, adding that focus, discipline and teamwork will be crucial to Nigeria’s success.
According to him, the players are fully aware of the expectations from Nigerians at home and abroad and are determined to approach the round-of-16 tie with seriousness and hunger.
Iwobi also praised the team’s unity and tactical discipline so far, crediting the coaching crew for maintaining balance between defence and attack.
“The spirit in the camp is very good. Everyone knows what is at stake, and we are ready to fight for each other and for Nigeria,” he added.
The Super Eagles are targeting a fourth AFCON title, having last lifted the trophy in 2013. With the competition intensifying, the team understands that any slip could end their title hopes.
Nigeria’s opponent in the round-of-16 is expected to pose a stern test, and fans will be hoping the Super Eagles translate their group-stage form into knockout success.
